Afghanistan

Mountain valleys, Silk Road cities and a long, layered history.

Afghanistan sits at a crossroads of Central and South Asia, and its landscapes are dramatic: the Hindu Kush, the blue lakes of Band-e Amir and the long finger of the Wakhan Corridor reaching towards China. Herat's Friday Mosque and citadel, the remote Minaret of Jam and the empty niches of the Bamiyan Buddhas record centuries of empires, trade and faith.

Afghan hospitality is famous, built around green tea, kabuli pulao and bread from clay ovens, and travel between regions is slow over mountain roads. Most governments currently advise against all travel here, so check your government's current travel advice before planning anything. Climatically, spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; winters are harsh in the mountains and summers very hot in the south.
