One of Europe's oldest cities, built on seven hills
Plovdiv is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, spread over a series of hills. Its Roman theatre, still used for summer performances, looks out over the plain, and a Roman stadium lies partly exposed beneath the main shopping street. The Old Town is full of colourful 19th-century National Revival houses, several of them museums. Kapana, a tangle of lanes once home to craftsmen, is now the city's lively arts and bar district.
