The lakeside economic capital on Lake Tanganyika
Bujumbura sits on the north-eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, the longest freshwater lake in the world, with the mountains of the Democratic Republic of the Congo visible across the water. Its lakeside beaches, such as Saga Beach, are popular for swimming and sunset drinks, and hippos can sometimes be seen near the Rusizi River delta. Burundi's royal drummers, whose ritual dance is inscribed by UNESCO, are a proud tradition, performed at Gishora near Gitega. The city is a base for trips into the surrounding hills.
