French chic on a small Caribbean island
St Barthélemy, known as St Barts, is one of the most exclusive islands in the Caribbean, with a distinctly French character. Gustavia, the capital, has a harbour lined with superyachts, designer boutiques and Swedish-era stone buildings from the period when the island was a Swedish colony. The beaches, including Saline and Gouverneur, are undeveloped and uncrowded, while St-Jean has beach clubs. The short airstrip, ending at the beach, is famous for its steep approach. The food is excellent, blending French cooking and Creole flavours.
