Xi'an

Terracotta warriors and ancient city walls

Xi'an, once called Chang'an, was the capital of several Chinese dynasties and the eastern end of the Silk Road. Just outside the city, the Terracotta Army, thousands of life-size clay soldiers guarding the tomb of the first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, is one of the great archaeological finds of the twentieth century. In town, cycle the top of the Ming-dynasty city wall, visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and eat through the Muslim Quarter: roujiamo, biangbiang noodles and yangrou paomo.
