A port city at the mouth of the Red Sea
Djibouti City sits on a peninsula at the southern entrance of the Red Sea, a strategic port for centuries. Its European quarter has whitewashed colonial buildings around the Place du 27 Juin, while the African quarter holds the Hamoudi Mosque and the central market. Seafood and Yemeni-influenced dishes such as fah-fah and skoudehkaris are local specialities. Between roughly November and February, whale sharks gather in the Gulf of Tadjoura, and boats run out to see them.
