Rock forests and prehistoric art in the Sahara
Tassili n'Ajjer is a vast sandstone plateau in the Sahara of south-eastern Algeria, eroded into rock arches, canyons and 'forests' of stone. Its shelters hold one of the world's greatest collections of prehistoric rock art, more than fifteen thousand paintings and engravings showing wild animals, cattle herds and daily life from a time when the Sahara was green. Treks with Tuareg guides leave from the oasis town of Djanet, and the red dunes of Tin Merzouga lie to the south.
