Dakhla

A desert lagoon made for kitesurfing

Dakhla sits on a narrow peninsula stretching some forty kilometres along the Atlantic coast, where desert meets ocean. The shallow lagoon behind it, sheltered from the waves and swept by steady trade winds much of the year, has made it one of the best-known kitesurfing spots in Africa, with camps spread along the shore. Flamingos and other birds feed in the lagoon, oysters are farmed in its waters, and the white dune of Dragon Island rises at low tide.
