Africa
Art deco boulevards, a highland capital and quiet Red Sea islands.
Eritrea is one of Africa's least-visited countries. Asmara, the capital, sits high on the plateau and is a UNESCO-listed city of Italian-era modernist architecture, including the Fiat Tagliero service station and cinemas and cafés along Harnet Avenue. A dramatic road and historic railway drop from the highlands to the port of Massawa on the Red Sea, gateway to the Dahlak Archipelago.
Life in Asmara is calm and orderly, with espresso bars, pastry shops and evening strolls, alongside injera and zigni stew. Travel beyond the capital is tightly controlled, so check the current requirements with care before planning your route. The highlands are pleasant for much of the year, while October to March is the most comfortable time for Massawa and the coast.
