Coffee, jazz and the bones of Lucy
Addis Ababa sits high on a plateau in central Ethiopia and is the seat of the African Union. The National Museum holds Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old skeleton of an early human ancestor, and the Holy Trinity Cathedral is where Emperor Haile Selassie is buried. Merkato is one of the largest open-air markets in Africa. Food is a highlight: injera with wat stews, raw kitfo and the coffee ceremony, in the country where coffee is said to have been first discovered. Ethio-jazz clubs keep a distinctive musical tradition alive.
