A turf-roofed capital in the North Atlantic
Tórshavn is one of the world's smallest capitals, and its old quarter on the Tinganes peninsula, where the Faroese parliament first met in Viking times, is a cluster of red wooden buildings with grass roofs. It makes a practical base for the islands, which are linked by tunnels, bridges and ferries. Nearby are the Múlafossur waterfall dropping into the sea at Gásadalur, the lake of Sørvágsvatn perched above the ocean, and puffin colonies on the island of Mykines in summer.
