Ilulissat

Icebergs the size of towns in Disko Bay

Ilulissat sits on Disko Bay beside the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier sends enormous icebergs drifting out to sea. Boardwalks and trails lead from town to viewpoints over the ice-choked fjord, and boat trips sail among the icebergs, especially magical under the midnight sun. In winter, dog sledding and the northern lights take over. The town is Greenland's third largest, with colourful wooden houses on the rocks and a museum in the birthplace of the polar explorer Knud Rasmussen.
