A small capital on an island in the Gambia River
Banjul sits on St Mary's Island where the Gambia River meets the Atlantic, one of the smallest capitals in Africa. Arch 22, a monumental gateway, has a museum and a view over the city, and the Albert Market sells fabrics, spices and fish. Most visitors stay in the resorts of Kololi and Kotu along the coast just west of the city. The country is known for its birdlife, with more than 500 species recorded, and the sacred crocodile pool at Kachikally in Bakau is a popular stop.
