Guadeloupe

A butterfly-shaped French island of volcano and beach

Guadeloupe's two main islands form a butterfly shape. Basse-Terre, to the west, is mountainous and green, with rainforest, waterfalls such as the Carbet Falls and the active La Soufrière volcano in Guadeloupe National Park. Grande-Terre, to the east, is flatter, with sugar-cane fields, beaches and resorts around Sainte-Anne and Saint-François. Pointe-à-Pitre's Memorial ACTe is a major museum on the history of slavery. Offshore, the islands of Les Saintes, Marie-Galante and La Désirade are quieter still. French and Creole cooking meet in accras and colombo curry.
