Africa
Volcanic Bioko, mainland rainforest and a Spanish-speaking capital.
Equatorial Guinea is split between Bioko island, home to the capital Malabo, and the mainland region of Río Muni. Malabo has Spanish colonial buildings and a cathedral, while Bioko's southern beaches at Ureca are important nesting grounds for sea turtles and the island's forests shelter rare primates. On the mainland, Monte Alén National Park protects rainforest, and Bata is the largest city.
It's one of Africa's least-visited countries, with limited tourist facilities, and trips usually require local contacts or organised tours. Spanish is widely spoken, and food features fish, cassava and plantain. The drier months from December to February are generally the best time to visit, particularly for Bioko; the rest of the year is humid, with frequent rain.
