Haiti's capital on the Gulf of Gonâve
Port-au-Prince is Haiti's capital, spread across hills above the Gulf of Gonâve. Haiti became independent in 1804, the first nation founded after a successful revolt by enslaved people, and the capital holds much of that history, including the Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien, with the anchor said to be from Columbus's Santa María. The city has a celebrated artistic tradition, from naïve painting to the recycled-metal sculpture of the Grand Rue artists and the iron craftsmen of nearby Croix-des-Bouquets.
