The city of Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar
Babylon was the capital of Hammurabi, whose law code is one of the oldest known, and later of Nebuchadnezzar II, who rebuilt it with vast walls, palaces and the processional way. Today visitors walk among the mud-brick ruins by the Euphrates, see a replica of the Ishtar Gate, whose original glazed-brick lions and dragons are in Berlin, and view the Lion of Babylon statue. The site, on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2019, lies about 85 km south of Baghdad near Hillah.
