Kiribati

Remote atolls on the equator, great fishing and hardly any tourists.

Kiribati is 33 low-lying atolls and islands scattered across the central Pacific, straddling the equator and the 180th meridian. South Tarawa is the crowded capital, and Betio still bears Second World War relics from the Battle of Tarawa. Far to the east, Kiritimati (Christmas Island) is famous for bonefishing and huge seabird colonies, while the Phoenix Islands are a vast marine protected area.

Travel here is basic and rewarding for the self-sufficient: guesthouses, fresh fish and coconut, and a slow pace shaped by the tides. Maneaba meeting houses sit at the heart of village life, and visitors should dress modestly. Flights are infrequent, so plan around them. It is hot all year; June to October is generally the drier stretch, while the wetter months bring more humidity and squalls.
