Africa
Volcanic islands, spice scents and reefs few travellers see.
The Comoros are a volcanic archipelago in the Indian Ocean between Mozambique and Madagascar. Grande Comore is dominated by Mount Karthala, one of the world's largest active volcanoes, and Moroni's old medina and harbour mosque sit on the shore. Mohéli is home to a marine park where turtles nest, and Anjouan has steep green valleys and plantations of ylang-ylang and cloves.
Tourism is small-scale, and the islands have a quiet, conservative Muslim culture where modest dress is appreciated. Expect fish curries, coconut rice and fresh fruit. Getting between islands takes patience, with limited ferries and flights. The dry, cooler months from May to October are the best time to visit; the wetter season from December to March carries a risk of cyclones.
