Kaesong

Goryeo capital near the border

Kaesong was the capital of the Goryeo dynasty, from which Korea takes its English name, between the tenth and fourteenth centuries. Its historic monuments are a UNESCO site, including the Songgyungwan Confucian academy, the Sonjuk Bridge and royal tombs such as that of King Kongmin. The town lies close to the demilitarised zone and is usually visited on organised tours from Pyongyang combined with a stop at Panmunjom. Kaesong is also traditionally famous for its ginseng.
