Mekong river towns, saffron-robed monks and an unhurried pace.
Laos is a quiet, mountainous country threaded by the Mekong. Luang Prabang, a UNESCO-listed town of temples and French-colonial houses, is the highlight, with its dawn alms-giving and the turquoise Kuang Si Falls nearby. Elsewhere are the limestone scenery of Vang Vieng, the mysterious Plain of Jars, the river cave of Kong Lor and the islands of Si Phan Don in the far south.
Life runs slowly, with sticky rice, larb, grilled river fish and fresh baguettes at breakfast. Slow boats, buses and the Laos–China Railway link the main towns, although mountain roads take time. November to February is best, dry and pleasant; March to May turns hot and hazy, and the rains from June to October make some roads difficult.
