Jūrmala

A long sandy beach of wooden spa villas

Jūrmala stretches along a narrow strip of land between the Gulf of Riga and the Lielupe river, with more than 30 kilometres of fine sand beach. Since the 19th century it has been a spa resort, and the pine woods are dotted with carved wooden villas, many restored. Jomas iela, the pedestrian main street in Majori, is lined with cafés and restaurants, and spas still offer treatments with local mud and mineral water. Trains from Riga take around half an hour.
