Libya

Roman cities by the sea and some of the Sahara's wildest desert.

Libya has some of the Mediterranean's most spectacular ancient sites. Leptis Magna and Sabratha are vast, well-preserved Roman cities on the coast, and Cyrene in the east was a major Greek colony. Tripoli's old medina and Red Castle overlook the harbour. In the south, the Sahara includes the Akakus Mountains with prehistoric rock art and the old desert town of Ghadames.

Libya has been affected by conflict and political division for years, and many governments advise against all travel. Travellers should check their government's current travel advice before planning a trip. Any visits are usually arranged through local agencies. Food features couscous, bazin and spiced soups. Climate-wise, spring and autumn are best for the coast, while the desert is most comfortable between October and March.
