The French side of a two-nation island
The island of Saint Martin has been divided between France and the Netherlands since 1648, with an open border between them. The French side feels more relaxed, with Marigot, the capital, known for its market and Fort Louis overlooking the bay. Grand Case is famous for its restaurants and lolos, casual barbecue stands serving ribs and grilled fish. Orient Bay is a long beach with watersports, and small boats run to the tiny island of Pinel, with its calm water and beach bars.
