Marshall Islands

Atolls, lagoons and Second World War wrecks far out in the Pacific.

The Marshall Islands are a chain of 29 coral atolls and five islands, most barely above sea level. Majuro, the capital atoll, wraps a long, narrow road around its lagoon to the quiet beaches of Laura at the far end. Bikini Atoll, a UNESCO site from the nuclear-testing era, has a lagoon full of sunken ships, and outer atolls like Arno offer simple village stays and superb reef.

Marshallese life revolves around the lagoon, canoes and church, with food centred on fish, breadfruit and pandanus. Facilities are basic outside Majuro, and reaching outer atolls depends on small planes or boats that don't run often. The drier trade-wind season from December to April is the most comfortable; May to November is wetter and more humid.
