Bamako

Music capital on the banks of the Niger

Bamako spreads along both banks of the Niger River and has long been one of the great music cities of Africa, home to griots, kora players and stars such as Salif Keita and Oumou Sangaré. The National Museum of Mali holds fine collections of textiles, masks and archaeological finds, set in gardens next to the Parc National de Bamako. The Grand Marché and the artisans' market sell bogolan mud cloth, jewellery and leatherwork. The Point G hill gives a view over the city and the river.
