Singing dunes, flaming cliffs and Bactrian camels
The Gobi is less a sea of sand than a vast landscape of gravel plains, mountains and grassland, with pockets of spectacular dunes. Khongoryn Els, the singing sands, rise to around 300 metres and hum as the sand slides. At Bayanzag, the Flaming Cliffs, explorers of the 1920s found the first known nests of dinosaur eggs. Yolyn Am is a narrow gorge where ice can linger into summer. Travel is by 4x4 across open tracks, with nights in ger camps and rides on two-humped Bactrian camels.
