Africa
Saharan trade towns, the Aïr Mountains and the Niger River's green ribbon.
Niger is mostly desert, with the Niger River running through its south-west corner past Niamey. Agadez, an old caravan town, is known for its mud-brick Grand Mosque and its soaring minaret, while beyond lie the Aïr Mountains and the dunes of the Ténéré. Near Kouré, the last herds of West African giraffe roam among farms, and W National Park straddles the border.
Travellers should check their government's current travel advice before planning, as most governments advise against all travel to Niger because of insecurity. The country's culture is rich: Tuareg silverwork, Hausa markets and the Cure Salée gathering of herders in the north. Climate-wise, November to February is the most comfortable; the heat in April and May is severe, and the rains follow from June.
