Convict history among the Norfolk pines
Norfolk Island lies in the Pacific between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. It was a penal settlement in the early 19th century, and the Georgian buildings of Kingston, part of a UNESCO-listed group of Australian convict sites, still stand by the sea. In 1856 descendants of the Bounty mutineers moved here from Pitcairn, and their culture and language, Norf'k, remain. The island is famous for its tall Norfolk Island pines, and Emily Bay offers calm swimming inside the reef.
