A planned capital beneath Aso Rock
Abuja became Nigeria's capital in 1991, a planned city laid out in the centre of the country beneath the granite monolith of Aso Rock. Its landmarks include the golden-domed Nigerian National Mosque, the National Christian Centre and the Millennium Park. The Jabi Lake area and the city's markets offer a more relaxed side. On the road north, Zuma Rock, a huge granite dome with a face-like pattern, is one of the country's best-known natural landmarks.
