Oceania
The world's smallest island republic, circled by a single coast road.
Nauru is a single raised coral island in the central Pacific, only a few kilometres across. A ring road circles the coast in well under an hour, passing Anibare Bay, the island's best-known beach. Inland, the 'topside' plateau is a stark landscape of limestone pinnacles left by phosphate mining, with Buada Lagoon a patch of green and Command Ridge holding Japanese wartime guns.
Very few tourists come, so expect a handful of hotels, simple eating and a genuinely local experience rather than a holiday resort. Fishing and swimming along the reef are the main pastimes, though currents can be strong. It is hot and humid all year; roughly November to February is wetter, and the rest of the year is generally drier.
