Moscow

Onion domes, the Kremlin and grand metro halls

Moscow grew in rings around the Kremlin, the red-walled fortress that has been the seat of Russian power for centuries. Beside it, Red Square is framed by the multicoloured domes of St Basil's Cathedral, the GUM arcade and Lenin's Mausoleum. The Tretyakov Gallery holds the greatest collection of Russian art, from medieval icons to the avant-garde, and the Bolshoi Theatre is one of the world's great stages. Underground, the metro's early stations are lavish halls of marble, mosaics and chandeliers.
