A Georgian port in a narrow valley in the South Atlantic
Jamestown is squeezed into a steep valley on the north-west coast of Saint Helena, one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world. Its Georgian buildings, castle and St James' Church date from the East India Company era, and Jacob's Ladder, a staircase of 699 steps, climbs the valley wall. Up on the island's green interior, Napoleon lived his final years at Longwood House, and giant tortoises, including the famous Jonathan, graze Plantation House's lawn. Diana's Peak has cloud-forest trails, and whale sharks visit in the southern summer.
