Paramaribo

Dutch colonial wooden streets on the Suriname River

Paramaribo's inner city is a rare survival of Dutch colonial timber architecture, with white houses, green shutters and red-tiled roofs along the Suriname River. Fort Zeelandia guards the waterfront, and the Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral is one of the largest wooden buildings in the Americas. On Keizerstraat, a mosque and a synagogue stand next to each other, reflecting the country's mix of Hindustani, Creole, Javanese, Chinese and Maroon peoples. That mix makes for great food, from roti to Javanese saoto soup. Dutch is spoken.
