South Sudan

Great Nile wetlands, cattle-camp traditions and huge antelope migrations.

South Sudan is a vast country of savannah, swamp and forest, crossed by the White Nile. The Sudd is one of the largest wetlands in the world, and Boma and Badingilo national parks see one of Africa's biggest mammal migrations, involving hundreds of thousands of antelope. Mundari cattle camps near Terekeka, with their long-horned Ankole-type cattle, are a striking sight.

Travellers should check their government's current travel advice before planning; most governments advise against all travel because of conflict and insecurity. Juba, the capital, is the only realistic entry point, and infrastructure is minimal. Climate-wise, the dry season from December to March is the only time roads are reliably passable; the rains from April to November can cut off whole regions.
