A rainforest island in the Gulf of Guinea
Príncipe is the smaller of the country's two main islands, and the whole island is a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Rainforest climbs over volcanic peaks and phonolite towers down to beaches such as Banana Beach and Praia Macaco, where turtles nest in season. The tiny capital, Santo António, is one of the smallest in the world. Restored plantations such as Roça Sundy, where observations of a 1919 eclipse helped confirm Einstein's theory of relativity, are part of the island's story.
