Ancient souqs, Crusader castles and some of the oldest cities in the world.
Syria sits at the crossroads of the ancient Near East. Damascus and Aleppo are among the oldest continuously inhabited cities, with the Umayyad Mosque, covered souqs and Aleppo's hilltop citadel at their heart. Krak des Chevaliers is one of the best-preserved Crusader castles, and Bosra has a remarkable Roman theatre. Many historic sites, including Palmyra and parts of Aleppo, were badly damaged during the war.
Travellers should check their government's current travel advice before planning; years of conflict have left the situation unstable and infrastructure damaged. The country is known for its hospitality and cuisine, from kibbeh and muhammara to Aleppo pepper and sweets. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; summers are very hot inland and winters can be cold and wet.
