Africa
Sandstone arches, crocodile pools in the Sahara and elephant herds.
Chad stretches from the Sahara to the savannah. In the north-east, the Ennedi Massif is a maze of sandstone arches, rock art and the Guelta d'Archei, where camels drink beside crocodiles. The lakes of Ounianga shimmer in the desert, the Tibesti Mountains rise in the far north, and Zakouma National Park in the south is known for its recovering elephant herds.
Travellers should check their government's current travel advice before planning, as governments advise against travel to large parts of Chad. Visits are expedition-style, by 4x4 with experienced operators, camping far from any town. Climate-wise, November to February is the most comfortable; April and May are fiercely hot, and Zakouma is generally visited in the dry season before the rains.
