Three remote atolls reachable only by a long boat ride from Samoa.
Tokelau is a territory of New Zealand made up of three small atolls: Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo. There is no airport, and the only way in is a passenger and cargo boat from Apia in Samoa that takes more than a day. Each atoll is a ring of low islets around a lagoon, with villages built on a few of them.
Very few outsiders visit, and a trip needs advance permission and accommodation arranged locally. Life is communal and traditional, shaped by fishing, church and the village elders, and visitors should dress modestly and follow local custom. Expect simple food from the lagoon and coconut palms. May to October is generally calmer; November to March is the wetter cyclone season.
