Dili

A young nation's quiet seaside capital

Dili is the capital of Timor-Leste, one of the world's youngest countries, set on a bay backed by steep hills. A path climbs to the Cristo Rei statue at the eastern end of the bay, with quiet beaches below. The Timorese Resistance Archives and Museum tells the story of the long struggle for independence. The waters off Dili and nearby Atauro Island are part of the Coral Triangle and offer excellent diving and snorkelling, and whales pass the coast on their seasonal migration.
