Swimming with humpback whales
Vava'u is a cluster of forested islands and sheltered waterways in the north of Tonga, with the small town of Neiafu on one of the finest natural harbours in the South Pacific. Between July and October, humpback whales come here from Antarctic waters to give birth and raise their calves, and licensed operators take visitors to swim with them. The calm channels also make Vava'u a favourite with yacht sailors, and caves such as Swallows Cave and Mariner's Cave can be reached by boat.
