Oceania
A string of low atolls where the airstrip doubles as the town square.
Tuvalu is one of the world's smallest countries, nine low-lying reef islands and atolls in the central Pacific. Almost everyone arrives at Funafuti, where the runway is the island's biggest open space and in the evenings becomes a place for football, volleyball and a breeze. The Funafuti Conservation Area protects islets and reef across the lagoon, reached by boat for snorkelling and birdwatching.
There is little tourism infrastructure, just a few guesthouses, local fish and coconut dishes and a warm, unhurried community. Life is closely tied to church, the maneapa meeting hall and the sea. A hired scooter covers Fongafale easily. It is hot all year; May to October is usually a little drier, while November to April is wetter, with cyclone risk.
