Oceania
Remote US islands and atolls closed to casual visitors.
The United States Minor Outlying Islands are scattered specks across the Pacific, including Wake Island, Midway Atoll, Johnston Atoll, Baker, Howland, Jarvis, Palmyra Atoll and Kingman Reef, plus Navassa Island in the Caribbean. None has a permanent population. Most are national wildlife refuges protecting seabird colonies, coral reefs and marine life, and several hold relics of the Second World War.
There is no tourism in any normal sense. Wake Island is a military-run airfield, Palmyra hosts a small research station, and access to the refuges is by special permit for scientists, conservation staff and military personnel. Unless you have official business, these islands are best explored through documentaries and books rather than a trip.
