Cobbled colonial streets on the River Plate
Colonia del Sacramento was founded by the Portuguese in 1680 and fought over with Spain for a century, leaving a mix of both styles in its Barrio Histórico. The Calle de los Suspiros, with its sunken central gutter, is the classic street, and the lighthouse beside the ruins of a convent gives views over the river. Old cars sit parked as decorations outside restaurants. Ferries cross from Buenos Aires in about an hour, making it a common day trip, but it is at its most peaceful overnight.
