Crater lakes and churches in a quiet lagoon
Wallis, or Uvea, is the main island of the French territory of Wallis and Futuna, one of the most remote and least-visited places in the Pacific. The island is ringed by a wide lagoon scattered with small islets, reached by boat for swimming and picnics. Inland, Lake Lalolalo fills a steep-sided volcanic crater. The stone Cathedral of Mata-Utu and other churches reflect the strength of Catholic faith here, while customary kings still play an important role alongside the French administration.
