Lava fields and blowholes on Samoa's big island
Savai'i is the largest island in Samoa and one of the largest in Polynesia, yet it is sparsely populated and very traditional. A ferry crosses from Upolu. In the northeast, lava from eruptions in the early 1900s flowed over villages, leaving the ruins of a church standing in the black rock. On the south coast, the Alofaaga blowholes send seawater shooting high into the air, and the Afu Aau waterfall drops into a cool swimming pool. Villages here keep the fa'a Samoa way of life.
