Yemen

Mud-brick skyscrapers, mountain villages and the strange trees of Socotra.

Yemen has some of the most distinctive architecture in the Arab world. The Old City of Sana'a is famed for tower houses decorated with white gypsum, and Shibam in Hadramawt rises from the desert as a walled city of mud-brick high-rises. Terraced mountain villages cling to the highlands, and the island of Socotra is known for dragon's blood trees found nowhere else.

Travellers should check their government's current travel advice before planning; the country has been affected by war for years and most governments advise against all travel. Yemen has a long tradition of hospitality, coffee and honey. The cooler months from October to March are the most comfortable, while strong monsoon winds make Socotra hard to reach in summer.
