Europe
A Pyrenean pocket of ski runs, stone churches and high mountain trails.
Andorra is a tiny principality wedged high in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, with no airport and no coastline. Andorra la Vella fills the main valley with shops, while the slopes of Grandvalira and the quiet Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, a UNESCO site, show the wilder side. Small Romanesque churches such as Sant Joan de Caselles dot the hillsides.
Most visitors come for skiing in winter or hiking in summer, and many combine it with duty-free shopping and a soak at the Caldea spa. Food is hearty mountain fare with Catalan roots: grilled meats, trinxat and wild mushrooms. December to March brings reliable snow, while June to September is best for trails and lakes; spring and late autumn are quiet shoulder months.
