North America
Sheltered bays, sailing history and a sister island of pink sand.
Antigua is famously said to have a beach for every day of the year, and its scalloped coastline makes the claim feel plausible. Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour is a restored Georgian naval base still full of yachts, while Shirley Heights looks down over the whole scene. Quiet Barbuda, a short hop away, has vast empty sands and the frigate bird colony at Codrington Lagoon.
Days drift between calm west-coast bays, windier Atlantic beaches like Half Moon Bay and long lunches of saltfish, fungee and pepperpot. Taxis and local buses cover Antigua, and a ferry or small plane links Barbuda. December to April is dry and breezy, with late April busy for Sailing Week; the peak of hurricane season, around September, is best avoided.
