The town of a thousand windows
Berat is known as the town of a thousand windows for its white Ottoman houses stacked up the hillside above the Osum river. The Mangalem and Gorica quarters face each other across an old stone bridge. Above them, the Kala citadel is still inhabited, with Byzantine churches and the Onufri Museum of icons inside its walls. Together with Gjirokastër, Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is a relaxed place to stay a night or two.
